Subject: Proposed Changes to Federal Roadless Rule

Synopsis: The US Forest Service (USFS) proposed rescinding the “Roadless Rule”, which helps to protect roadless areas from development of transportation systems until and unless a clear need has been provided to do so. In Idaho, a compromise approach was reached involving multiple stakeholders that continues to provide satisfactory outcomes for a wide cross section of stakeholders. PCTU recommends that, rather than rescinding the “Roadless Rule”, the USFS either retain the current rule as is, or work with stakeholders in individual states to develop a framework using the Idaho model.
